Il s'agit de termes d'origine américaine qui désignent des opérations policières complexes. Dans le contexte américain, un "sting" consiste en une opération d'infiltration où les policiers se posent en clients désireux d'acheter de la marchandise, tandis que dans un "reverse sting", les policiers se posent en vendeurs pour capturer les grossistes. Cependant, ces termes sont souvent utilisés indifféremment et leurs définitions exactes varient d'un État à l'autre.
